Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a rainy Friday morning in the western Gorge, and it’s a somewhat windy morning in the eastern Gorge. We’ll start off Friday with westerlies at 16-19 east of the Deschutes River. As a weather system moves through today and high pressure builds off the coast, the wind will pick up. This is not an ideal situation – you can expect the wind to be up-and-down and unreliable. The highest quality wind will be east of the low clouds and past the rainbows. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have 22-25 between Mosier and Arlington, or perhaps Swell and Arlington if we get lucky. The wind will fade east of Rufus in the late afternoon, dropping to 18-22 at the desert beaches. The Stevenson to Viento stretch will probably stay cloudy today, keeping the wind in the gusty 13-16 range or so.

A trough of low pressure that’s been assisting the onshore gradients moves east into the Rockies tonight, and high pressure builds in strong and fast from the coast. This sets us up for a calm day on Saturday, with the east wind picking up just a bit into the single digits in the afternoon. Cold air in the desert combines with warmer air in the western valleys for an east wind day on Sunday. We’ll have E 30-35 at Rooster Rock and 25ish at Cascade Locks and Stevenson. Home Valley should see 20-25. As you go further east, the wind strength will fade. Models suggest the wind will hold until mid-afternoon.

As of right now, we’re looking at another round of easterlies on Monday, with peak speed of 20-25 at Rooster Rock mid-morning. Tuesday’s currently looking like west wind at 15-18. After that we go into a very rainy and stormy period for at least a couple of days.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Just a reminder that many of the trails above 8-Track in Post Canyon are closed. There will be heavy equipment in the closed areas over the next few weeks, so please stay out. We’ve had so much rain in the last 24 hours that Post and Whoopdee are too muddy to ride anyway! In addition, it’s been snowing and sticking above 3500′ or so. That means many of the trails along the 44 Road are likely to have snow. With 12” of new at Timberline on Friday, Gunsight and High Prairie are almost certain closed for at least a bit.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out. This morning is the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging 4 miles at 7am at Kickstand Coffee will get you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Yum! This weekend is Harvest Fest.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. I do this we are getting close!

Have an awesome day today!
