(First) Friday. Welcome to the Gorge, everyone! ORizona and WAlifornia, where 95 is the new 75!

Today seems like’s it’s going to be a lovely day on the river. It’s going to be crowded out there, so remember your right of way rules: starboard tack (the person going from Washington to Oregon, but not transporting marijuana between the two states, because that’s illegal) has the right of way. Right-of-way rules aside, our morning gradients are enough to send my research paper flying around my house: .09 (pdx-dls), .03 (dls-psc) and .50 (eph-dls). Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

With gradients like that, we’ll see westerlies at 17-20 this morning from Viento to Hood River. By mid-morning, we’ll have 23-26, and by early afternoon, the wind will pick up to 24-28 from Stevenson to Mosier. Later in the day, gradients are forecast to increase, leaving us with 27-31 from Swell (maybe – it might drop off there by then) to Rufus. Arlington will join in late in the afternoon with 16-19.

River temp is 71 degrees (warmest since the 1950s, according to OPB) and flow is 121kcfs (average for this date is 343kcfs).

Tomorrow looks windy as well, but a cold front moving into Canada in the afternoon will affect the wind speed and quality, so get out early. Expect 20-23 in the morning from Viento to Mosier, or maybe just from Viento to Swell. The wind will hold through the morning, filling in from Stevenson to Mosier. In the afternoon, as that weather system makes a move, we’ll see gusty 23-26, likely strongest at Stevenson, with the Swell to Doug’s stretch receiving gusty 15-18.

Sunday still looks light and variable with a chance of some light to moderate westerlies late in the day. Monday looks like 22-25.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones today, 24-27. Jones tomorrow, 13-16. Jones Sunday, 10-13. Sauvie’s today, 11-14. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 7-10. Sauvie’s Sunday, light.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/20-225/30-35, NW swell 6′ @ 8 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/10-15/25-30, NW 3′ @ 4. Sunday: light N/light N/light S, NW 6′ @ 9.

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

This one is for those of you planning on blowing stuff up tomorrow. Fireworks are fun, and they’re fun to share with your kids and friends. This year, however, consider letting the pros do your explosive activities for you. We’re currently under a red flag fire warning with what are probably the driest conditions on record.

Combine the dry fuels with the hot breeze, and you have a recipe for disaster if just one spark from one of your fireworks escapes your control.

Yes, you are missing out on a fun bonding experience with your kids and friends if you don’t blow stuff up this year. On the other hand, you’re creating the opportunity for a valuable conversation about responsibility, choices, and climate change. You can have that conversation with your kids, and you can have it with your friends. And the money you don’t spend on fireworks can take the whole crew of you out to dinner. Or maybe you could donate some to the Red Cross to help fund their shelter operations for the next Gorge wildfire.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Hello from Hood River, where 95 is the new 75, peppers and cherries ripen in June, and sweet potatoes are an appropriate crop. Expect temps in the mid 70’s this morning and the upper 90’s (AGAIN) this afternoon. Strong wind. Zero fucking rainbows. I WANT RAINBOWS.

Tomorrow starts off cooler, with temps in the mid 60’s, but it’ll be just as hot, with temps topping out in the mid 90’s. Moderate wind. Still no rainbows. Expect Sunday to be the hottest day of the weekend. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the upper 90’s in the afternoon. Once again, NO RAINBOWS.

If you want rainbows, I suggest making them yourself. I found some inside a fountain on the PSU campus on Wednesday. You could try standing under a waterfall. I bet there would be a lot of rainbows there too.

Road and Mountain Biking

Another reminder for 4th of July weekend: it’s dry as a bone out there, and we are at IFPL 3. No moto riding. In addition, Kreps and SDS lands closed for the summer this morning due to fire danger, so no more riding Whoopdee or Hospital Hill until further notice. In addition, the Gifford Pinchot went to IFPL 2 this morning, so there’s no more moto riding over there. If you are driving on forestland, you’ll need to carry a gallon of water and a shovel or a 2.5lb fire extinguisher.

In more positive trail news, I rode the Gorge 400 yesterday, and it’s dry but not full of ball bearings. It’s also shady and forested with a creek at the bottom. Yeah, it’s only 4 miles each way, but it’s still a nice ride.
