Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Some really interesting weather happened on Mt. Hood yesterday. When I left around 2:30pm, it was microsleeting (I made that word up). It definitely wasn’t snow, but it definitely wasn’t rain. Between the hours of midnight and 3am, the mountain received .3” of WV with no accumulation. In other words, the snow up there will be quite heavy. It didn’t ever make it above freezing, but it definitely got warm, maxing out around 31 degrees. Anyway, moving on to today… Expect a very snowy day. The snow level will be the equivalent of 4500′ for much of the day, falling to 1500′ after midnight. We’ll see .9” water value (WV) during the day for 7-9” of not-dry-not-wet snow. We’ll see another .5” overnight, for 5-6” of more dry snow. Wind will be SW 20 all day, turning to WSW 35 overnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

I’d like to remind you that you have night skiing tonight at both Meadows and Skibowl. Both will be good, but Skibowl has the best nachos on Mt. Hood. Just FYI.

Saturday starts off with light snow flurries. The snowfall will pick up after 1pm. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ all day. We’ll see .2-.4” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 2-4” of new snow. Then we’ll see another 1.2” WV overnight, for 13-15” of new snow. Wind on Saturday will be WSW 40 early, WSW 25 midday, and W 35 in the evening and overnight. That will make for some 100% epic storm skiing!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Sunday looks snowy, snowy, snowy all day long. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ all day and all night. We’ll see .8” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 9-11” of pow-pow. We’ll see another .9” WV between 4pm and 4am, for 10-13” of pow-pow. Wind on Sunday will be W 35-40 all day (storm skiing, for sure!) and W 25 after midnight. Woo-hoo!

Monday now doesn’t look bluebird. Instead, we’ll have light snowfall. The snow level will be 1000′ early and near the valley floor (at least in the Gorge) by mid-morning. We’ll see .3” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 4-5” of fluffy, fluffy snow. Wind will be WSW 20 for much of the day, turning to W 30 in the afternoon. Tuesday now looks bluebird with temps in the single digits, and the rest of the week currently looks dry and cold as the formerly scheduled weather system passes to the south.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It appears the iWindsurf sensors at Rooster Rock and Stevenson are at least partially frozen, because the numbers make no sense when compared with the gradients and the Troutdale readings. Our gradient at 6am was still E .19. I think it’s probably actually blowing 35-40 there this morning. The wind will fade to 25-30 around 4pm and drop to light easterlies overnight. We’ll start off Saturday with light east wind, becoming light W in the western Gorge around 1pm and staying light all day east of Cascade Locks. If the models are correct, the western Gorge to Cascade Locks will pick up to W 13-16 around 7pm. Current run shows west 7-10 on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

All this crazy winter weather can be a total pain for some people. For others, it can be an imposed vacation. I’ll let you guess which one of those I am. =)

If you’re totally freaking out about how this is going to impact you, I’d like you to take a moment to remember what it was like to have a snow day when you were ten years old. Or if you grew up in a place without snow, take a moment to think about how a little kid would react to a day like today. Maybe even picture a specific little kid.

Your next task is to incorporate some of that little kid energy into your day. Maybe even do something kid-like. For example, you could XC ski around town. You could go sledding on 7th Street. Bring some hot cocoa and have a couple pizzas delivered to share. Make snow angels, throw snowballs, and let some of that excited kid energy back into your responsible adult world.

It’ll make the disruption in your life a bit easier to handle. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Snow today with freezing rain after 9pm. Approximately 4” of snow will fall today, followed by .3-.5” of ice tonight. Double those numbers for western Gorge. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and the upper 20’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows, duh. Saturday starts off with freezing sprinkles. The afternoon is a tough call. If we warm above freezing, we’ll see moderate rain overnight. If not, we’ll see lots of ice. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early. Models say 40 degrees in the afternoon, but I’m going to call BS on that. Mid 30’s at best? Light wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks rainy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s all day. Light west wind. 6% chance of rainbows. Another round of freezing rain followed by snow arrives Monday, followed by bitter cold all next week.

Road and Mountain Biking

You can ride your bike if you have a fat bike. =)

Upcoming Events

I have no idea what events are on or off today. Let’s just say it’s snowy and 7th Street is open for sledding. Max speed last night was 17.4mph, but maybe once it’s packed down you’ll be able to do better than that. Please wear a helmet!

Have an awesome day today!
