5/4 Gorge wind, Rally racing, and Hipsters at Double Mountain

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

This is the last weekend of ski season at Meadows, so if you want to get some lift serve Cascade corn snow under your feet, get up there this weekend. It’ll be a lovely place to hang out in nuclear force east wind – it’s gusting to 62 at the top of Cascade as I write this report. Maybe that’s better wind for windsurfing or kiting or SUP downwinding?

Speaking of wind, there’s zero on the river now, and only a .03 east gradient at 5am. Do not be fooled by this; we’ll see east wind pick up to 30-35 at Stevenson and Rooster today, with a slow build to 5-15 along the rest of the river and 15-25 in the upper valleys. Tomorrow looks very similar to today, as far as wind goes. On Monday, we’ll see east wind at 10-15 to start and west wind at 5-10 in the evening.

In events, there’s the Oregon Trail Rally today – if you want to check out the cars, the staging ground is the Hood River Fairgrounds. I’m not sure how late they’ll be there. If you want to watch some racing, you can check it out at the intersection of Fir Mountain and Huskey Roads. The racing moves to the Dufur area tomorrow. In rally-related party news, there’s a big party at Double Mountain tonight. Head on over for your weekly fill of Portland Hipsters… hah… this should be good: rally car folks and hipsters crammed into Double together. There’s also euro bike racing on the TV at Dirty Fingers at 5pm. Wish I could go to witness the fun at Double, but I’ll be at Interesting Mosier.

In other news today, there’s a mountain bike trail work party on Bad Motor Scooter from 9am to noon, there’s a fast-paced road bike ride leaving Ground Coffee in Hood River at 9am, and there is, of course, Interesting Mosier, where you can hear 20 3-minuteTED-style talks. It’s intellectual entertainment for the short-attention-span crowd, and it’s only $5.

Have an awesome day today!
