Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Just a heads up that I will be out of town starting Friday for a week. Have a wonderful New Year’s! For today, Wednesday, we’ll see snow on Mt. Hood. The snow level for the Mt. Hood area will be near 0′. The mountain will pick up .4-.6” water value (WV) by 4pm (heavier after 1pm), for 5-7” of new snow. Another .2” will fall overnight, for a couple inches more. Wind will be W 30 int eh morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and W 15 after midnight.

A warmer and much wetter system moves in on Thursday. The snow level will starts at 2500′ and rise to 8000′, dropping to 6500′ after midnight. Mt. Hood will see a few inches of snow followed by 3”+ of rain between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Wind will be W 15 early, WSW 40 in the afternoon, and W 50 overnight (which will really crank up the precip totals).

Friday sees continued rain, possibly mixed with wet snow for a brief period around sunrise. Snow returns after midnight. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 5500′ around sunrise, and 9000′ for much of the day. After the bulk of the precip moves through, the snow level will drop to 2000′ after midnight. Mt. Hood will see about 1.5” rain during the day, .7” rain in the evening, and .3-.4” water value that falls as 3-4” of snow after midnight. Light to moderate snowfall continues on Saturday, followed by a dry period next week.

Random Morning Thoughts

I notice that when I make plans to head out on vacation I tend to worry about things. Worry is natural, but there’s a bit difference between worrying and planning for things that may come up. We can do the latter without the former.

Worrying is a waste of time and energy. It involves thinking about possible negative outcomes without taking action to prevent or respond to them. Planning, on the other hand, gives us power. Planning gives us control. Planning involves concrete steps that take place outside the whirling, circling, energy-draining thought cycles in our heads.

Planning can put a stop to our worries by making them irrelevant. It’s not a perfect fix – sometimes there aren’t solutions – but it’s a reliable way to reduce our anxiety. Stop getting caught up in your thoughts. Write down some possible answers. Take some steps. See if that doesn’t make you feel a wee bit better. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
